Your connection
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server. The owner of a local Wi-Fi network or your internet provider can see that a VPN is in use, but cannot read the traffic inside that connection.
Your public IP address
Websites see the VPN server address instead of the public IP address assigned to your connection. This reduces network and approximate-location exposure.
What a VPN cannot do
Signing into an account still tells that service who you are. Cookies, browser fingerprinting, malware and information you share can also identify you. Keep devices updated and use unique passwords with multi-factor authentication.
